Also known as a macaron and French macaroon, these colourful meringue-based almond treats have stolen the cupcake’s crown as our indulgence of choice. Macaron, the French word translated as macaroon in English, is a delicious and complex confection made from egg whites, sugar, almond powder, and possibly, other flavourings or colours. The perfect macaroon is best described as a cookie that is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The French macaroon should not be confused with the coconut macaroon because they are completely different. These little delights are not for the dieting set and are quite rich, read high in calories, but every once in a while, everyone deserves a little treat.
